Beckers commits to widespread Science Based Targets including Net Zero before 2050

Beckers has become the first coil coatings company to commit to net-zero emissions by 2050 as part of its wider aspiration to reduce emissions throughout its value chain.

The company has pledged to establish climate targets in line with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). These targets will be submitted to the SBTi in time.

“We are proud to be the first company in the coil coating industry to commit to the Net Zero target,” says Gavin Bown, CTO at Beckers. “Our proactive value chain approach to reducing our climate impact is a clear competitive advantage for us – both now and in the future.”

SBTI Beckers Sustainability Value Chain

Value chain approach

Beckers reduced its absolute CO2e emissions in its own operations (scope 1 and 2) by 51% between 2013 and 2023. But with more than 98% of the company’s emissions resulting from customers and suppliers (scope 3), Beckers must collaborate with its entire value chain.

“We believe in the power of collaboration and innovation to drive change,” says Bown. “While we are committed to our own sustainability goals, we understand the importance of supporting our suppliers and customers in their efforts. Success in this endeavor requires collective action across the entire value chain.”

Pioneering Positive Impact

“Achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 will be a challenge in the complex coil coating value chain in which we operate,” explains Nicklas Augustsson, CSO at Beckers. “But we must continue to do everything within our power to succeed, even though we don't have all answers or solutions today.”

Beckers’ SBTi commitment reinforces its strategy to rapidly reduce its CO2e emissions in the near-term in line with the latest science. For its engagement, Beckers also was recently recognized by the Financial Times as one of Europe’s Climate Leaders. With the company’s commitment to submit its science-based climate targets to the SBTi, Beckers will continue to transition into a business with lower climate impact and transform how it collaborates with value chain partners.

About the SBTi and Net Zero

The SBTi is a collaborative effort between CDP (formerly known as the Carbon Disclosure Project), the UN Global Compact, the World Resources Institute, and the World Wide Fund for Nature. Its goal is to drive ambitious corporate climate action by encouraging companies to set science-based emissions reduction targets.

Achieving net-zero emissions means no net increase in carbon emissions: any GHG emissions produced are counterbalanced by an equivalent amount of GHG removals, either through natural processes like restoring forests or technological solutions like direct air capture and storage.
